Awesome video man! I have a question. What was that choir effect from 2:26 timestamp to 2:28 because it was her voice but around that timestamp it sounded like a choir made out of her voice but what was that effect. I hope to hear back from you! Thank you!

I realize this may be time consuming in a training video, but how about ACTUALLY running a channel with an input (via DAW) and APPLYING an effects to demonstrate how it works and sounds. In addition, an audio engineer and/or their team will have to spend an entire day to apply and play with even the basics of effects send/returns for various instruments and vocals. I would spend two days. ;)

I'm no expert but I do advise my team to keep it somwhere between cathedral and rock concert...ultimately worship needs to be loud enough for folks in the sanctuary to sing along comfortably while also not being a distraction to their neighbors. 😅 I also believe that the volume level in the space should somewhat be gauged on how full the sanctuary is from one service to the next. More bodies = more freedom to crank up the Mains a bit more IMO. Great topic guys thanks!

We typically have another worship song after the message. Folks ears have been adjusted to a lower level for a speaking voice, so for the song after the message, my DCA's are not at full volume yet. I slowly ramp the volume and by the chorus it's pretty full.

Our church has a Worship Leader who "wants thump from the subs and to feel the low-end". Thing is, the drums are un-shielded and so we have to mix above the drum kit. I tend to be a little lower level than another mixer at my church and yet I think it works but I have turned things up and I get the "mix was good" from those few who want more. This doesn't necessarily consider the wants of others in the congregation. However ... we just had Seventh Day Slumber come through and play a concert at our church Friday night and we saw 115 dB on the meter (I think he may NOT have done Slow A but that same WL said he saw 115). Some little kids in the room were fine with it. So, I don't know what to think lately :)

For drummers with 10 years experience, asking to play quieter is temporary. Some just ignore fully - usually because they have never used control much before and their FoH has fixed it in the mix so their loud drums are covered by a louder band. The bleed of snare, cymbals and such into the vocal mics will end up as a timing wash in the online feed due to uncaged drummer. And no, smaller churches are NOT replacing drums with plugins. They are just throwing out the band into the feed as-is. Many smaller churches don't know how to do virtual sound check or know how to record their tracks.

Great discussion! Just coming out of the other end of a loudness issue at my church. We're load in load out so we do our best to utilise a drum screen, and have recently added a roof to kill the drums a little more which has helped. However, the venue is an acoustic nightmare so a lot of the issue was actually the reflection of the room. People perceived it to be loud, however what they were hearing was a harshness in the high mid range from vocals, guitars and keys. The moment we dialed that stuff down, everyone was a lot more happy and in fact we could push it back up to around 90dBa very comfortably and we're now getting comments from the congregation saying how they can finally worship again without getting distracted. Now that's a huge win! I'm very thankful MKL mentioned the Fletcher Munson curve because it puts proof to what we've just actioned, so it's definitely something I will be reading up on and teaching to my techs moving forward. SIde not on drums... getting an acoustic drum kit tuned, mic'd, EQ'd and processed to a point that sounds good take a lot of time, effort, knowledge and skill which frankly a lot of churches don't have. I'm also a drummer and traditionally hated electronic kits, however I have changed my mind and do think it's worth investing in a good one that sounds and feels good because it serves a less experienced team a lot better IMO.

This is called “virtual soundcheck”. If you google your console and the words “virtual sound check” you’ll probably find some videos that actually cover the process on your console. In general, the process is this: record the raw, multi-track audio to some sort of DAW. Each instrument goes to its own track. Then use your DAW to replay the recording back. The mixer receives each instrument as its own input and then passes the audio through the channel processing. This is what allows you to mix without the band. A lot of digital consoles allow this. Which mixer do you have?
